Are you adding propane heating or appliances to your home, moving into a propane-powered home for the first time or switching providers? You might wonder whether it makes sense to lease or own your propane tank.
At Dixon Energy, we set up propane tank leases with customers that enable them to go about their lives without worrying about maintenance or repair costs for their fuel storage. As long as you’re a Dixon Energy customer, we handle the upkeep of your tank. (We’ll also change it out if your propane needs change.)
Is a propane tank lease right for everyone? While there’s no one-size-fits-all propane solution, we find that most customers prefer leasing their tanks. Here are some of the pros and cons of leasing versus owning your propane tank.
Pros: When you lease a tank from a propane company, your company installs the tank for you. An experienced and knowledgeable team can help you choose the best tank size for your home’s needs. Additionally, having a propane tank lease means that the company services, repairs and replaces the tank as needed. They also handle any state and local permitting and certification. You should check with your propane company because many offer preferred fuel rates or other benefits to their tank lease customers.
Cons: The most significant downside to a tank lease is that only one propane supplier can fill the tank for you. You should also check with your propane company to know in advance what termination fees might be part of the lease.
Pros: A considerable benefit of owning your tank is the freedom it affords you. You can switch propane suppliers if you want. Additionally, you won’t be limited to the type of tanks your propane company carries. You can also choose who services your equipment.
Cons: To begin, purchasing a tank yourself means you won’t have a seasoned team of propane technicians to guide you. And the cost of a new tank can be high, often in the thousands of dollars. While you will enjoy a level of control over how your tank is maintained (and by whom), you’ll be shouldering a lot of responsibilities (and expenses) as the owner, including the following:
